Mini Makes...Display Box

Flowers in a glass box...

Earlier this week  I finished a lovely shoot in Spitalfields,
which I really look forward to sharing with you in January.
It was the last day of the stormy weather
and the sky turned black so early,
that we lost the chance to photograph everything
we had hoped to, but that's one of the hazards
 shooting during the Winter months!

Meanwhile, I had a few things left over,
including this glass display box from the fabulous
ethical mail order gift company Nkuku
and some hyacinths and narcissi from my
 favourite local florist Velvet Brown
The lovely distressed shutter is from The Home Barn.
I found the little Gisela Graham bird in our box of christmas decorations
which I just got out for the kids and I
couldn't resist including it!

As these flowers are still fresh and not yet dried or pressed
(can you preserve a hyacinth anyone?!),
I guess it's not strictly a 'permanent' make,
but I'll still call it the first in my Mini Make series!
I simply cut out a piece of card and covered it with
Les Fougeres by Brunschwig & Fils to fit snugly inside the box.
The flowers and bulb have just been laid inside for this post,
but I will work on preserving them for a permanent display next time!
I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Styling Details...

In our house this week..

I have had a bit of a tidy up, but unfortunately (according to Jon),
this does involve bringing 'more sticks into the house'!!
The acrylic painting was another find in
Grandad Gordon's  loft-I'm the only one who likes it
and it makes a great backdrop for shots.

Coming back from the school run on Friday
we accumulated a selection of hedgerow on the way
ready for a magazine shoot on Tuesday-
if it all survives the tube ride!
 Have a lovely week x

Behind The Scenes

Styling Details...shooting at home

I really appreciate all my regular readers over the past 8 months who have left the most lovely comments and sent me some really kind emails-thank you so much. For those of you who have said how much they love the behind-the-scenes shots, this little post is for you...

My previous 2 posts have featured some beautiful vintage props from The Home Barn. My 'behind the scenes look' today shows all those lovely objects ready and waiting in our bedroom at home, where I shot  those posts and another one still  to come! My old neighbour's lovely vintage kitchen table plays a huge part in my pictures as it's the nicest table I own!

The crate of props sat in our room for a week over half term, when I snatched a couple of hours each day once I'd worn the kids out (or should I say, once they'd worn me out) and I felt justified in plonking them in front of the TV for a while (always promised I wouldn't do that... ;-) Luckily it was before the clocks changed so I was able to shoot until at least 6.30, unlike now when the best light's gone by 3.30.

Most of the photos are just me experimenting with light/exposure/focus-ie twiddling buttons until I got it right-not the best method I know, but until I take a course where somebody actually shows me what to do, I'm afraid no photography manual in the world will manage to hold my attention for very long. Can anyone recommend a good manual that's simple, clear and step-by-step, not too technical, perhaps with lots of lovely pictures to follow?!

Some of the items have been placed or 'styled' as test shots, but on the whole, they're just a collection of bits and bobs from that week, just as they were, sat in our room, driving Jon a bit mad... I hope you like them!

And talking of supportive readers and new friends, last year I met the lovely Margarita of Chocolate Creative at 100% Design. We recently saw eachother again at Holly's Decor8 Workshop and she has incredibly kindly written such a lovely blog post all about Trend Daily. Please go over to her blog and take a look. Thank you so much Margarita x

Vintage Finds 2

Last week I took Evie and Gabriel along to  The Home Barn
in Marlow, Bucks. Despite them running a riot,
we all managed to get a few goodies together to photograph.
The Home Barn is a must see for lovers of all things vintage.
Stop by the next time you venture out of London,
with great pubs near by for lunch and,
of course, the river, it's a great day out.

My Instagram stream has loads of other shots too!

Vintage books and Letterpress

Trawling through charity shops
used to be a real passion of mine and it was lovely
to find these books recently. The amazing letterpress tray
(yes, a whole tray) was a fantastically lucky find
in Grandad Gordon's loft. I will take a picture
of it for my next post, but I did take a quick Instagram !

The slate tiles were on sale at B&Q, so I bought 6-
just because... and Jon's really pleased to have
them lying around the family room...
The 3 boxes actually hold 500 mini test tubes,
which Jon bought me as a present off ebay-
I'm going to make something with them-
they're only 5cm long-any ideas?!
 Don't hold your breath though!
 Happy Bonfire weekend!
